It all started about 39 years ago when the young Yuvadas Gandhi decided to open a food stall in Brickfields in 1972. Breaking away from established tradition he wanted to run the food stall as a vegetarian outlet as he himself was a vegetarian. He aptly named his food stall "Gandhis" since it was not only his own name, but also that of the famous Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi, also a vegetarian who preached and urged people all his life to follow vegetarianism. Yuvadas's father had also added the "Gandhi" name to his son out of his love and respect for Mahatma Gandhi. In order to be innovative and to at-tract customers in Brickfields which was already crowded with many food stalls and restaurants, Yuvadas Gandhi blended Chinese vegetar¬ian concepts into his Indian cooking styles which eventually became a hit among food connoisseurs. When his health deteriorated in 2002, Yuvadas Gandhi was unable to effectively run his food stall and was saddened that all his dreams of taking his business to the next level would be shattered and that all his experience and skills acquired over the years would go into waste but that was not to be. |
